• A wild Eurasian Beaver swims in the River Tay near Dunkeld in Perthshire taking food back to it’s lodge…07.06.17
It is estimated that some 250 wild beavers have made their home in the River Tay/River Earn catchment areas. The Eurasian beaver, Castor fiber, was hunted to extinction in Scotland 400 years ago for their fur and a galndular oil (castoreum). The beavers in Tayside have been in the area since at least 2006, and originate either from escapes or deliberate releases from private collections. Beavers are completely vegetarian. They do not eat fish but instead prefer to munch on aquatic plants, grasses and shrubs during the summer months and woody plants in winter.
