  • 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Barrosa part of the Peninsular Wars, which the then Major General Thomas Graham won on 5th March 1811. General Sir Thomas Graham of Balgowan Lord Lynedoch was born in 1748 on the Balgowan Estate between Methven and Gilmerton near Perth, after the tragic death of his wife the Honourable Mary Cathcart in 1793 Sir Thomas became a soldier at the age of 46. Sir Thomas became a national hero when news got back to the UK of the victory at The Battle of Barrosa and from 1813 to 1814 he served as second in command to the Duke of Wellington in Spain. After being made a peer in 1814 for his military services Lord Lynedoch retired and the City of Perth made him a freeman in 1815 and subscribed the portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence to be painted. Pictured by the portrait is Major Colin Innes who has just returned from Spain where on Sat 5th March the Spanish celebrated the Battle of Barrosa with a large parade of Spainsh Military servicmen in the city of Chiclana, near Barrosa.<br />

Pictured by the portrait is Major Colin Innes who has just returned from Spain where on Sat 5th March the Spanish celebrated the Battle of Barrosa with a large parade of Spainsh Military servicmen in the city of Chiclana, near Barrosa.<br />
