• River Tay Otters, Perth…29.02.16
An otter watches a seagull as it feeds on an eel in the River tay this morning in the centre of Perth. The otters need a quiet habitat such as a vegetated riverbank, reed bed and islands for foraging and breeding. In the centre of Perth you have al those but not the peace and quiet!
Scotland is a european stronghold for otters. Pesticide pollution of waterways eliminated otters from most of England and Wales but they survived in Scotland's cleaner water bodies. Otters are largely solitary, semi-aquatic mammals that obtain most of their food from lochs, rivers or the sea. The Scottish population unusually comprises a particularly high proportion (perhaps 50% or more) of coastal-dwelling individuals that feed almost exclusively in the sea.
